Developing Data-Driven Tools to Enable Formulating Non-Standard Steel Casting Alloy Composition and For Determining the Design Properties of Common Cast Steel Alloy Grades

Public

The Steel Founders’ Society of America (SFSA), in order to support the users of steel castings, has solicited commercial test results for the composition and properties of common alloys. This exhaustive data set allows a data-driven analysis of steel casting technology. This project was initiated to use the data to formulate a useful method of predicting the properties of non-standard conventionally alloyed quenched and tempered (QT) steel casting alloys. Reliable predictions would allow a casting shop in a military forward operating base (FOB) to use scrap available to formulate heats to produce castings for maintenance and innovation. The project expanded to the analysis of the SFSA data, to determine the properties of commercial heats of common alloys and to compare the casting grades with other product forms. The insights would provide designers with the data needed for safe and reliable casting design.
