FRIDAY JUNE 24 1949 This afternoon took Bruce Lourie, Hi Park, Cy Washburn, Jim Shevlin, Ted Johnson out to see the tractor and bultivatio at Homewood. They all drive both the new tractor and the MT Cultivating corn. They all said they thought the new tractor had great possibilities. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ required thickness, and rolls it into coils at the end of the line. COLD MILL Function of the cold mill is to finish roll all aluminum sheet previously hot rolled in the Hot Mill. Equipment which performs these operations are a 72-inch tandem mill, 72 inch single stand mill, 60 inch single stand mill, and 48 inch singel stand mill. Finishing Mill various "finishing" operations are per- formed in this mill area. Heat treating, annealing, shearing, inspection, and shipping are some of the operations per- formed here. PLATE MILL Where all plate operations are performed, except the initial slab rolling operation on 144inch reversing hot mill. plate is a minimum of one-quarter inch or more in thickness. Alcoa's Davenport Sheet and Plate Rolling MIll is the most modern sheet and plate rolling mill in the world. Here, athe world's widest sheet and plate is rolled from the largest ingots cast anywhwere in the aluminum industry. From ingots weighing more that 7,000 pounds, aluminum coils weighing in excess of 5000 poinds are produced. Coils produced at other mills weight approxi- mately 3,000 poinds. The 100-inch continuously Hot Mill produces aluminum sheet in escess of 90 inches wide. Previously, a max- imun of 60 inches was the maxium. Aluminum is melted at 1400° and rolled at 900°. Japs are used (20about) and tricycle electric chairs (20) to get around in. Dinner later at Arsenal for Ordinance Ass.
