Public Deposited188 WEDNESDAY, JULY 7, 1926 At Walla Walla. Here Portland owns the Walla Walla Implement Co. With Ben Keator, Gustafson, & Al Bayer we travelled 80 miles to see Rod Weeders and Combines. Took a reel of movie film of a Cheney Rotary Rod Weeder. The sq. rod revolves xxxx 1 1/2 times as fast as drive wheels and in opposite direction. The bar travels a matter of 2" or 3" beneath the top of the ground and what weeds there are are brought to the surface and the roots cleaned so that they die. This weeder is gradually succeeding the 'slicker' which is a ($20.00, home made straight knife.) [Drawing: cycle knife] drawn by 6 or 8 horses. A stiff tooth cultivator on account of the ashey and powdery condition of the soil will not kill the weeds. A 12 foot rod weeder weighs over 500 lbs and sells to farmer for about $100.00. Cheney & Walla Walla the principle ones. Should be more flexible for uneven ground. Does not throw out of gear. Rod & combine having 27 horses on side hill, dusty & dirty beyond belief. Took movies of combine.
