[Insert: Letter] I was able to give him some strong food during our interview. Up to now he has not yet been heard by any judge! The "Habeus Corpus Act" permits every body to be heard within 48 hours after having been arrested Apparently they don't know this in the Communist Gov- ernment of Eastern Germany. Dr. Sack is still proprietor of his factory. Many factories have been nationalized and since the middle of last year the nationalized has been stopped. Now the only possibility of nationalizing is when a factory owner has not managed his factory during 2 years. So, maybe Dr. Sack has to stay in prison for 2 years and then he is rid of his factory. When he will not get better food he will never reach the end of these two years. His wife dos'nt get one cent of his salary since they day he was arrested. She will soon have to work as a nurse in order eto earn living for her children and herself. She has to pay 1.50 Mark per day for board in prison for her husband. As she has no money, her furniture is being put under security by the State, so that payment of the prison board is sure. She is living in three small rooms in the attic of the factory and she has only some second hand furniture, which no American workmen wold care to have. Really, Mr Brown, you cannot imagine how these people have to live. Her children being the children of a former Capitalist, are not allowed to attend a high school. They can only attend the lower school. Mrs Sack is now giving private lessons to her children. The family Sack has been living in a very large country house where they could entertain 200 people in their dinner room. Their garden was over 400 acres with swimming pool and tennis-courts. Dr Sack had the bad luck to be the grand- son of Mr Rudolph Sack, who had built this beautiful house and these gardens.
