Monday AUGUST 8 1949 Busy getting house ready and our things unpacked Another heat wave but the air here is good. Kate Amy and Evarts came up bringing a picnic supper with them. Later in evening the Tom Allens called. This letter came from Bill. written July 31st "I just gotback from a weeks trip to Switzerland with Joe Dunlap [Postage Stamp] in the car to take the last advantage of it before the Ackermans come on Tuesday. We went to Zermatt, at the foot of the Matterhorn & climbed up to the Gornergrat to see the maze of glaciers up there (we were over 10,000 feet high. a fantastic sight! On our way up we passed a cortege bringing three bodies on sleds of Englishmen they had slipped down a slope which ended in a sheer drop of 600 feet. Also I bought a watch at Zermatt. I want to use the money Granny left me to pay for it. It cost about $4000 thin and beautiful. We went up the Rhone Valley to the Rhone Glacier, over the Grimsel Pass and down to Intulsken and Berne coming out by the way of Cohner to see the famous Griswold Issenheim Alter Biel the inspiration for Hindenmith's Mathis der Maler. Mrs Sardenberg comes tomorrow and may take some of my drawings back with her to try to sell for me in New York."
