Monday, June 16, 1941 Cloudy/Rain [Headlines:New Haven Journal; World news] Elise and I took the 830 train to New York. We went to see Mathilda at 510 Park Avenue. Hugo is felto to be near the end. He has Brights Disease and the doctors say there is no help fo rhim. Nothing can be done they say. Mathilda is beside herself with grief and it is hard, very hard for her. We came back to New Haven on the noon train. Elise saw Hugo but he was sleeping and he has not known anyone for the last few days. It is very hard on dear Elise. We attended Class day in Brantford Court. The Class History and Oration both were very fine. It was impressive to to see the 600 odd seniors in their march into the court behind a band with cap and gowns and each with a long clay pipe smoking. They all sat in rows on the grass. I took some colored movies. The class pipe was passed around and each man took a puff. Then we went to the Presidents reception and shook hands with President & Mrs Seymour. Then Bill took us to the Elizabethan Club, and later to the reception at Davenport College, given by the Master Emerson Tuttle and Mrs Tuttle. Here we saw the Bruce Simonds and Dan Merriman and Mary Emerson. In evening the 3 of us went to the Concert of the Yale Glee Club at Woolsey Hall. It was delightful The solos were wonderful.
