Sunday, March 16, 1941 Rain [Headlines: Honolulu Advertiser; World News] At nine this morning Elise Lee Bill & I joined ten others in a picnic of the Donoghues. We drove one hundred miles around the lsland of Oahu. We went past Pearl Harbor where 3/4 of our navy is. We saw Many many ships. Then past Wright Fiels and in sight of Schofield Barracks. Then over a Military Road past huge sugar cane and pineapple ranches. [Drawing: Map of Oahu] This Military road was crooked and steep going then the mountains where it is said there is more jungle growth than any on islands. We went thru a stream of water which stalled the two Fords. The surf at Waiinea Bay was wonderful and I tried both stills and movies Unfortunately it rained most of the time but the views were magnificent. The banana trees are interesting. The Pali and Uside down Falls thrilling. It is a day not soon to be forgotten.
