Everest postage stamp and First Day Cover, India, 1953

Public Deposited

The first ascent of Mount Everest by a British expedition on May 29, 1953 was celebrated around the world. At the summit, New Zealander Edmund Hillary took a photograph of Sherpa Tenzing Norgay holding his ice-axe with the flags of the United Nations, Great Britain, Nepal, and India. After the ascent, each of these nation states claimed the ascent as their own. India issued postage stamps in 1953 using photographs of the mountain taken by the Indian Air Force, and Nepal and Great Britain have issued similar philatelic souvenirs and commemorative First Day Covers.
