Monday, January 20, 1941 80 cold Clear [Headlines: New York Times: Roosevelt Oath] Elise and I left Worcester on the 930 train this morning for New Britain. It means a great deal to mother to have us visit her and it does to us too. Had lunch with Marjorie Anne & Jude Pease and for the first time saw Curtis's 3yrs old and John 9 mos. old. [Signature: Marjorie-Anne Jude Pease] who reminded me much of John. Judes father is president of [Letterhead: NEW BRITAIN MACHINE CO] Spend 3 hrs in the plant and met Rockwell who has developed a hydraulic system in which a piston is held in any intermediate position by moving the valve lever to a corresponding position. It is a micrometer control accomplished by loading one valve and unloading another that balances the pressure on each side of the piston. Valves controlled by hand and handle cant be pushed faster than oil travels. Lever cant get away from hand. when hand stops piston stops too. Jude and M.A. drove us to New Haven at 5.30 [Signatures: William T. Brown] met us at HOTEL TAFT and we went immediately to the Emerson Tutle's for tea. (Headmaster of Davenport College At 7 we went to the Bruce Simonds for dinner and then to a concert in Woolsey Hall by THE NEW HAVEN SYMPHONY Orchestra. Here we met the Arthur Hagues.
