Alpenspitze, or the Alpine Summit in 1861. Residents of the Alps responded to external invasions by English climbers and foreign armies by planting the flag on the summit. Emil Rittmeyer's sketch of the Swiss flag on an allegorical summit appeared in a popular book by H.A. Berlepsch in multiple editions from 1861 onwards in German, English, and French.
