WEDNESDAY MARCH 17 1948 Attended a Deere & Co Branch House managers meeting from 9 AM to 9 P.M. At 5.30 went to the Wimans for coctails and then a dinner at the LeClaire. The purpose of the meeting was to tell the Branch House Managers the financial situation, the uncertainly of the times, the excess cost of manufacture buying steel in the gray market. It all added up to a decision to slow up a little after July next. The Branch men concurred but said it was tough not to give the dealers the goods they need. Dealers could sell much more than they can get. Some day this condition will change. No one knows when, but we have to be prudent and not get caught with high inventories. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I had a long time ago. My life was in great danger, and I was tremendously frightened, that is, one of us was, but there was another person just above, who "lay stretched in smiling repose," a calm spectator looking down to see how the person below would behave in his trying position. This suggested to me in a very lively way the probability that all the evidence is not yet in.
