Helvetien, in seinen Gebürgen, und in seinen Alpen betrachtet: als Quellen seiner Glüchseligkeit = L'Helvetie, considérée dans ses montagnes et dans ses Alpes, sources de son Bonheur, 1773

Público Deposited

David Herrliberger's "Helvetien, in seinen Gebürgen, und in seinen Alpen betrachtet: als Quellen seiner Glüchseligkeit = L'Helvetie, considérée dans ses montagnes et dans ses Alpes, sources de son Bonheur," was the frontispiece for the dual German/French language edition of Haller's poem, Die Alpen. The central panel represents the legend of William Tell and founding of the Swiss Confederation. In the background, Gessler's hat stands on a pole in Aldorf. After refusing to bow to the hat, William Tell shoots an apple on his son's head in the central tableau. The Rütli oath takes place in the foreground. The surrounding images offer a series of framed views of the Alps, a visual representation of the narrative strategy of Haller's poem.
