THURSDAY APRIL 1949 A letter from Bill came today in which he says "My birthday was duly celebrated here. Mary Callery bought me a book of Picasso's drawings published by Zeros and then we went to call on the great man himself. He remembered me from Antiles. Our visit was quite an experience as one is first let in my Marcel, the chaufeur, who goes into Picasso to see if he will see you- Then (because she is an old friend of Callery's) we were admitted tot he ante- chamber-du-voi as it is known, where we waited with some other people. Two gentlemen were told to go home after waiting a long while (they were there before we came) without seeing Picasso. Finally he came in and then all was very pleasent and easy. He signed the book of drawings for me -- it reads à Bill Brawn (wonderful spelling of Brown) Picasso 7 Avril 1949 I'm getting well settled in the studio and even have rented a upright piano here, which gives me great pleasure. I've seen both Grundy & Kailey several times havent gone around very much. On Wednesday Maria (the Ambassadoress) is having a party of 6 people to hear a brazilian singer- one of the other guests will be Schaparelli! Also Golschmanns been here a week but I haven't seen him yet. We drove out to Chantilly for lunch yesterday the country side is beautiful now, the woods full of daffodils. Love Bill Elise & I went to see "HARVEY" a play.
