200 Jahre Besteigung des Mont-Blanc: currency and stamps

Public Deposited

The bicentennial of the first ascent of Mont Blanc was widely celebrated in 1986. This large First Day Cover combines the French postage stamp issued to commemorate the 1786 ascent of Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard with a 20 Swiss Franc note minted in 1979 to honor Horace-Bénédict de Saussure's ascent of the peak in 1787. Two centuries later, all of the climbers were appropriated as symbols of the nation by states that did not exist at the time of their ascents.
