Oliver Twist (1837-38) blends humor and pathos, taking the orphaned Oliver from the grim world of the parish workhouse to a London gang of pickpockets, thieves, and prostitutes headed by the outcast Fagin. The novel appeared in monthly issues of Bentley’s Miscellany between February 1837 and April 1839, with no chapters of the novel published in the June 1837, October 1837, and September 1838 issues of that journal. The illustrations are by George Cruikshank.
