Mower sections are hardened like clutch for 1/4" on each cutting edge [Image: Sketch of sections] (Label: Hard) They are hardened in an automatic hardening furnace in which each section is clamped in between 2 blocks so that only the edges to be hardened are exposed. They are dropped into a solution of lime water which contains some vitriol. After hardening the sections are ground by passing about 4 times on the side ofa wet grindstone The scythe backs are [punched] and then rolled to straighten them. A capable man will straighten about 280 knifes in a day. Ledger or finger plates are hardened all over by heating to a Cherry red in fan shaped tonguethe plates being arranged in a fan shape. They are dropped in hot lead to harden. the serrated edge is put on before hardening.
