The Way is a top-down bullet hell roguelike game set in the dreams of the player character. Made in the Unity game engine, this project explores procedural generation, AI, weapons and other essential roguelike game mechanics. With inspiration from other roguelike games, the goal was to create one on our own following the game development pattern called Spiral Development, as described for small games development on Twitter. As described, Spiral Development is when you would create a full game loop as quickly as possible and then iterate on top of the full game loop so you could always have a complete game. We completed the goal of making a procedural top down shooter, but while Spiral Development had its pros, we as a group struggled to complete deadlines, stay organized and deliver new content under Spiral Development. Ultimately, we concluded that this production method did not benefit us and caused confusion for this team. This paper presents the development process of The Way, highlighting our experience with Spiral Development and lessons learned for future game development projects.
