Optimizing Fenton's oxidation for MTBE remediation

Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) is a gasoline oxygenate that is contaminating the national water supply. MTBE may pose a human health threat at high concentrations and is difficult to remove from water due to its physical and chemical properties. Fenton's oxidation uses hydrogen peroxide and an iron (II) catalyst to completely destroy MTBE in groundwater at optimal reaction conditions. The effects of pH and oxidant dose for Fenton's reaction were determined for E-pure water and water with added organic matter.
