Treatment options for perchlorate remediation

Public

The perchlorate anion (C104-) has been found in water supplies throughout the United States. Contamination is most often connected to ammonium perchlorate which is used as a propellant for missiles, blasting caps and other propulsion systems. Perchlorate's high activation energy causes it to be a persistent contaminant in water. This project conducted experiments to explore the parameters of two known methods of remediation: ion exchange and chemical reduction. It was shown that at low pH, ferrihydrite successfully reduced perchlorate concentration.
