Design of a glide control mechanism for a manual wheelchair

A resident at the Monson Development Center diagnosed with autism and profound mental retardation propels his manual wheelchair backward at high speeds. This presents a safety hazard to himself and those around him. A glide control device was developed that relies on adjustable friction belts that wrap around hubs attached to the wheels. This device provides good glide control while still allowing the client the freedom to independently maneuver around the facility.
