Design of a one-arm driven manual wheelchair

Public

Mobility limitations in some individuals with clinical conditions have created the need for a wheelchair which can be operated by a single arm. Therefore, we have developed a design which utilizes: (1) a lever arm to engage dual unidirectional cams to drive propulsion, (2) a toggle stick cable system to initiate, and (3) a rotary brake system to achieve braking. This design minimizes the required dexterity and improves the comfort of operation when compared to currently available systems.
