Role of solvent in the development of fibrous structures during electrospinning

Public

The effects of solvent properties were examined to determine how different properties affect fiber formation. The effects of the heat of vaporization, solvent dissolvability (good versus poor solvent), and dielectric constant were analyzed by electrospinning six different molecular weights of polystyrene in solution with various solvents. With the results gathered from the experiments, it was concluded that the heat of vaporization and dielectric constant are critical in the formation of fibers, while the solvent dissolvability plays a less significant role.
