Analytical modeling of multi-cam camshafts
PublicThe purpose of this project was to analytically and numerically model the effects of cam-follower system dynamics on camshaft vibrations. Focusing on torsional vibrations and lateral deflections of camshafts due to varying torque and forces caused by cam follower systems, computer programs were created which simulated these phenomena. A vibration model, which outputs the torsional deflection and torsional vibration of a system was created in Mathcad and verified through the testing of a prefabricated camshaft testbed. A deflection model which outputs the maximum lateral deflection and location it occurs along the camshaft was created in Virtual Basic and verified through hand calculations. With these analytical models, the engineer can be aided in the proper design of a camshaft.
