John Milton's Theological Struggle in Paradise Lost (1667)

Public

This MQP examines John Milton's theology in the epic poem Paradise Lost (1667). While Milton claims that his purpose in the poem is to "justify the ways of God", what actually emerges is Milton's struggle in understanding this very theology he set out to justify. I argue that Milton deliberately transcends the theology of the Scriptures to make his subject more complex, to display his talent as a writer and to engage in various theological and political debates.
