Disaster mitigation and public risk perception -- designing a model to disaster policy
PúblicoPublic concern for terrorist disasters is far greater than that for the much more probable natural disasters. Simulations using a system dynamics model indicate that a government policy of raising the level of public concern for terrorist as opposed to natural disasters, reflected in the media, may raise the perceived probability of disasters. The increase in public concern in turn leads to legislation that ultimately will be repealed, costing valuable resources in the process.
