Laying head gearbox design for a steel rolling mill

Public

The goal of this project was to perform a force analysis of a laying head gearbox for a steel rolling mill manufactured by Morgan Construction Company. A Microsoft Excel spreadsheet was developed to automatically calculate the bearing loads based on laying head component dimensions and configurations. The placement of the bearings and gears can be changed to determine their optimal location. Design recommendations for the gearbox were made to help increase the production rate of a steel mill.
