Biliary excretion in nonhuman primates -- model validation of an implantable catheter system

The purpose of this project was to validate an indwelling catheter system's ability to completely collect bile from an unrestrained, conscious cynomolgus monkey for an extended period of time. [14c] Glycocholic acid was administered as an intravenous bolus twice to three bile duct-cannulated cynomolgus monkeys, and the routes and rates of excretion of drug-related radioactivity were determined. Two animals had complete bile collection over the duration of the study. Average biliary recovery of administered dose was >94% for both animals over both collection periods. A third animal had only partial bile recovery during the first session and no bile collection during the second session. There were no adverse health effects observed over the course of the study.
