The synthesis of 5-Phenyl-1,2,4-thiadiazole

Various attempts to determine the cause of an oxadiazole side product during the synthesis of 5-phenyl-1,2,4-thiadiazole were conducted, and experiments were used to either prove or disprove the theorized causes. An attempt was initiated to synthesize the thiadiazole without its oxadiazole side product by fully purifying intermediates, and new methods for conducting the various steps of the synthesis were studied.
