Reproductive experience increases estrogen induced prolactin secretion in female rats

Public

Since prolactin secretion decreases with parity, we investigated estradiol's effects on its secretion. Two groups of age matched rats were ovariectomized, then challenged with 5 or 25 up/kg estrogen. Serum prolactin levels were determined by radioimmunoassay. Prolactin levels in primiparous females increased significantly at 5 ug/kg estradiol. While levels in nulliparous females show a dose responsive change, it was not significant. These findings may indicate an altered sensitivity to estrogen in dopaminergic control of prolactin secretion.
