open in viewerThe emerging “Internet of Things” has been used to greatly advance data collection in various medical and technological fields. Our sponsor, the Universitätsspital Zürich, wanted to find different applications of IoT devices that could benefit the field of otology. To accomplish this, research on the current state of IoT within medical fields was done through a literature review as well as interviews with researchers, clinicians, and industry experts. We found that IoT technologies are currently used to monitor patients’ health and acoustic environment remotely and can also communicate findings to patients and their doctors. Additionally, IoT systems can improve direct audio streaming to hearing devices in a given area, allowing for enhanced patient quality of life and data collection.
