TY - RPRT A1 - Schwertz, Steven James. AB - The paramyxovirus fusion proteins have a HR2 lysine rich strip immediately upstream from the transmembrane domain of the F1 subunit. To determine the role of the HR2 lysines on the biological activity of the Newcastle disease virus fusion protein, the lysines at positions 480, 487, and 494 were changed individually to alanine residues. All the mutant proteins showed variable surface expression, and the single amino acid changes lowered the fusion activity, but not significantly. Thus lysines 480 and 497 do not appear to be required for function.
