Residents of Magdalena, an underdeveloped community in Laguna, Philippines, are faced with a costly and contaminated water supply. Water-related illnesses are common. We visited Magdalena and researched water treatment options through journal articles, questionnaires and review of water improvement projects. Effective disinfection options include solar disinfection, boiling and sanitation. Affordability, social acceptance and public education are important in implementing these options. We recommend solar disinfection for Magdalena as this has been successfully used in underdeveloped communities throughout the world.
