The Microstructural effects of flash temperature exposure on Inconel 718

Public

The goal of this project was to determine the microstructural effects of flash fires on rotor disk material Inconel 718. An oxy-acetylene torch simulated flash fire conditions by heating samples for times ranging from one to thirty minutes to temperatures upwards of 1050 C. Flash fire simulation on Inconel 718 caused migration of the [delta] phase to grain boundaries, variation of grain sizes throughout the sample, and coarsening of [delta] particles.
