Forest fires continually damage the world’s supply of potable water. The goal of this project was to protect the Irquis watershed, located in Cuenca, Ecuador, from the threat of forest fires. To accomplish this, we worked with ETAPA EP to create a mitigation plan. We interacted with the community through interviews, educational programs, and local projects to understand their knowledge of the relationship between their water source and forest fires. After learning that the community does not fully understand the risks of forest fires to the watershed, we summarized our findings in an educational pamphlet to distribute. This gave the community awareness to support our mitigation plan that also serves as a model for other regions in Ecuador.
