Lignans, natural phytoestrogens found in flaxseed, have garnered increased attention due to their documented capabilities of inhibiting breast cancer development. However, to what extent and the specific mechanisms by which lignans inhibit cancer growth is still subject to scrutiny. Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), a type of lignan that has not been thoroughly studied, was combined with tamoxifen (TAM) and administered to T47D breast cancer cells to investigate its anti-proliferative effects and its interactions with the well-known cancer therapy drug. Results showed that SDG alone, TAM alone, and SDG combined with TAM significantly reduced T47D proliferation in comparison to untreated cells, and luminescence data showed that SDG was acting through the estrogenic pathway.
