Popularizing science -- practice and theory

The project explores the genre of popular science through the production of a popular science article and a guide for writing popular science. The popular science article, "The Origin of HIV," written for Scientific American with accompanying graphics and page design, discusses current theories of HIV origin. The "Guide to Writing Popular Science" introduces the rhetorical situation, the classic rhetorical appeals, and the practice of rhetoric in popular science. Three popular science articles are analyzed, and several book chaprters and articles on popularizing science are included.

  • This report represents the work of one or more WPI undergraduate students submitted to the faculty as evidence of completion of a degree requirement. WPI routinely publishes these reports on its website without editorial or peer review.
