Design and implementation of an automated ultrasonic inspection system

The goal of this project was to develop an automated ultrasonic inspection system for Norton Company's abrasive division in Worcester, Massachusetts. This system will be used to determine the quality of a particular abrasive product that the company manufactures. Currently, Norton uses a manual ultrasonic testing procedure, which involves several time consuming steps. The system designed in this project eliminates the need to perform the majority of these tasks manually, and thus saves time and increases efficiency. The main features of this system are: a fixturing mechanism that accommodates the various sizes and shapes of the product and provides the necessary paths of motion for the product while testing is conducted, a thickness-measuring mechanism that operates independently of an operator, and a data acquisition system that records certain data associated with the testing. The entire system is controlled with remote commands from a personal computer.
