Ring resonator method for dielectric constant measurement -- Ansoft simulation models and experiments

The goal of the present study is to investigate the performance of a ring resonator with a suspended ring - a simple device to measure dielectric properties (dielectric constant and loss tangent) of different materials at RF frequencies. The ring resonator device is studied parametrically and modeled in Ansoft HSFF v.10.1 fEM software package. Changes to different design parameters are made to observe their effect of the overall performance of the device. The effects of adding a copper shield above the ring substrate are studied and compared to the experimental device. The coupling between the ring and the feed lines is also considered. Results from each simulation and experiment are placed in tables and compared to the original model to determine changes that improve the device's sensitivity. These results should be useful for the design of the device with the best resolution.
