Characterization of biomaterials for tissue approximation

New developments in tissue approximation have created the need for a simple in vitro testing system to examine the watertight integrity and mechanical properties of different tissue approximation materials and techniques. The goal is to design a simple, reproducible testing method to assess the mechanics of different tissue approximation techniques on cylindrical vessels. To accomplish this, a system was designed that performs a burst test on porcine aortas and measures the strength of different approximation materials such as n-butyl-cyanoacrylate and albumin solder. Evaluation showed that the system provided reproducible results and was a good physiologic model that was able to compare these two approximation materials sufficiently.
