Mechanical modeling of the degradation of porous scaffolds used in tissue engineering

Porous biodegradable scaffolds are used extensively in tissue engineering. Optimal tissue regeneration requires that the scaffold's mechanical property loss should match the temporal development of tissue strength. The objective of this project is to couple existing models on mechanical behavior in cellular foams with kinetic data on biopolymer degradation to predict the loss in scaffold mechanical properties during in vivo degradation. This model shows that the scaffold's modulus and strength are affected by the size and shape of its microscopic cells, and can be used to determine the suitability of a scaffold processing technique.
