Many mice undergo surgery for research experiments, but little is done to control postoperative pain because mice are not specifically regulated under the Animal Welfare Act. Therefore, pain relief in mice is not well researched. This study examined the effects of two analgesics, ketoprofen and buprenorphine, as therapeutic options for postoperative pain in mice following laparotomy. In observing behavioral patterns over 48 hours after surgery, the mice who received these analgesic agents showed no difference in behavioral alterations from untreated mice after surgery, suggesting that pain was not alleviated or the behavioral alterations are due to some other mechanism.
