A fundamental study of microbial adhesion

The purpose of this project was to determine the effects of Aureobasidium pullulans' growth phase on adhesion forces, for potential use in bioremediation. Atomic force microscopy and column transport experiments were used to quantify these forces. As the cells passed from exponential growth to stationary phase, the polysaccharide, pullulan, grew and was distributed over the cell. Two sub-populations exhibiting different adhesion affinities were observed in the stationary phase, while cells in exponential were characterized by a single adhesion affinity.
