Amebocytes on steroids

Public

This project determines the morphological correlates of amebocyte enhancement in gill tissue by ecdysone and by the two molt-inducing pesticides, RH-5992 and RH-5849. RH-5992, the less toxic of the two formulations proves to be a safe enhancer of amebocyte production. The tissue showed thickened cell layers and also vacuolation later in the treatment cycle. RH-5849, however, proved to be less effective: neither amebocyte production nor increase in numbers was observed. The peeling of the cuticle indicating that the horseshoe crab may have been stuck in the molting process, which, ironically, is the desired effect of the pesticide on lepidopterans.
