Our project aimed to combat accumulating microplastic (MP) levels in southern Spain by evaluating the feasibility of implementing photocatalytic MP degradation systems in the water industry. Through interviews with water treatment plants and an evaluation of the photocatalytic technology, we determined that current photocatalytic processes are infeasible for industrial application. Additionally, the water industry in southern Spain is more concerned with other pollutants that are regulated by the government and pose more pressing issues for water treatment facilities.
