Constellation-X mirror assembly trade study & design

Public

Constellation-X is a continuing mission to explore black holes and dark matter with technology unmatched by any other past or present X-ray telescope. Although this mission is still in the concept development phase at Goddard Space Flight Center, it is projected for launch between 2008 and 2010. This project was enacted to aid NASA in the conceptual design of the Constellation-X mirror assembly structure and the detailed design and creation of the next module prototype for optical testing. A trade study was performed on mirror assembly designs to determine feasibility and to evaluate the different design options. The design and creation of the prototype involved 3-D modeling, materials research, and fabrication.
