Validating the Hooked On Nicotine Checklist (HONC) as a measure of nicotine dependence in adolescents

Public

The Hooked on Nicotine Checklist (HONC) is a ten-item instrument designed to measure symptoms of nicotine dependence at its onset in adolescents, even in low-dose smokers. A cohort of ninth grade subjects self-administered the HONC on two occasions. Statistical analyses revealed strong internal consistency and good test-retest reliability for the HONC as a whole. Subjects classified among four smoking experience levels reported significantly different scores. Our data confirm the usefulness of the HONC as a diagnostic tool in young subjects.
