Validation of LEWICE aircraft icing simulation software

Public

This report discusses the process of validating an icing simulation software code, LEWICE, being developed by NASA. LEWICE predicts the formation of ice shapes on airfoils based on given flow conditions. Different models were tested and compared to find the quickest and most accurate method for determining anti-icing energy requirements. LEWICE's predictions were compared to experimental data gathered in NASA Glenn's icing wind tunnel. Results show that using a potential flow, uniform droplet size, neglecting splashing model gave acceptable results.
