Design of 3" and 4" check valves

Public

The goal of this project was to design 3" and 4" check valves for manufacturing for the New Ward Valve Company in Manchaug, Mass. The New Ward Valve Company currently designs check valves up to 2 inches in diameter; however, larger diameter valves are needed in the pipeline industry. The design of these valves required knowledge of casting practices, materials, the American National Standards (ANSI), stress analysis, machining tolerances, and spring design. The 3" and 4" check valves were modeled and analyzed using finite element techniques in Pro/Engineer. A prototype was not constructed due to cost constraints; consequently, a similar design was purchased at low cost in order to test out the new plunger and sealing mechanism.
