Regulation of Runx genes during mesenchymal chondrogenesisPublic

The Runx family of transcription factors are crucial for cell differentiation in a variety of systems. We investigated the involvement of Runx1 and 2 during the chondrogenesis of mesenchymal condensations. Using a model system of mouse embryonic fibroblasts in high-density cultures, we were able to recapitulate mesenchymal to chondrogenic differentiation in vitro. Our present study proposes that Runx1 may play a role in the induction of chondrogenesis, whereas Runx2 may play an anti-chondrogenic role in undifferentiated mesenchyme.
