Investigation of direct methanol fuel cell catalyst synthesis

Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are very likely alternatives to current energy generation processes, particularly for portable applications. The main obstacles that must be overcome for DMFCs to develop into commercial contenders are the need for high metal loading (due to slow oxidation kinetics at the anode) and methanol crossover. Catalyst and electrode preparation procedures are investigated in an attempt to further advance the current technology and to identify areas of need. Recommendations for improvement of further studies are given.
